Era la settimana prima del "Natale 2010". Il giorno Giovedì, mi recai a Roma su un volo della "Easyjet" in partenza da Gatwick. Ero in viaggio, come al solito con il mio bagaglio: valige grandi e pesanti piene di sax e flauti e accessori importanti come cinghie e supporti, strumenti e canne. Quella sera avevo fatto le prove per lo spettacolo suonando con la band di Jerry Cutillo chiamata O.A.K. Maartin Allcock. Io ero l'ospite d'eccezione per 'Natale nel Deserto' uno show speciale all' "Antu Live Music Club", via Libetta, Roma. La serata è stata lunga e stancante, ma il set è stato emozionante e la performance è stata fantastica. Lo spettacolo venne fissato per Venerdì e ciò che lo rese del tutto eccezionale è stata la presenza di tanti bambini. Jerry ha un affascinante figlia di 8 anni di nome Isabella, la quale arrivò con i suoi  compagni di classe e con i genitori che li accompagnavano. Ho inviato una email a tutti gli amici della mia rubrica per vedere se qualcuno aveva conoscenze all'aeroporto. Uno dei miei amici, Gianni Leone, un genio della musica e membro della "Fraternità Osanna", decise di telefonare in aeroporto. Per caso Gianni riuscì a parlare con un funzionario comprensivo il quale si interessò alla storia di un musicista rock angosciato. Per caso, questo uomo, Eric Conte, era un fan della musica progressive anni 1970 e conosceva i Van der Graaf Generator, Osanna e Balletto di Bronzo, (band di Gianni). Così decise di lasciare la sua scrivania e andò a cercare la valigia con la foto e le descrizioni chiare nella sua mente. Più tardi, quella notte, Eric riuscì a trovare la valigia. Mi guardai intorno, la scena era caotica,i passeggeri,i caroselli, le borse e le valigie tutte sparse. Ancora una volta fui preso dal panico. Dopo 5 minuti:"l'ho trovata!" La mia valigia era sul nastro trasportatore N°2. Le chiusure e le cerniere erano state sciolte, ma sembrava tutto OK. Era stata chiaramente aperta; infatti il mio sigillo era rotto. Mi sono messo da parte ed ho verificato il contenuto, mentre Susie mi guardava con stupore per la miriade di strumenti e accessori contenuti nella valigia. Nulla è stato apparentemente sottratto. Mi sono sentito rinascere! Susie ha detto "Buon Natale!". Sono stato estremamente fortunato ad avere persone che volevano aiutarmi. Tra perdita di tanto tempo e la confusione, nessun funzionario sembrava aver cura o fare qualsiasi sforzo. Ancora oggi, alla pagina web di World Tracer si dice:"nessuna informazione sulla sorte del mio bagaglio,"... ma ce l'ho a casa e gliel'ho detto!

Il suo ingresso nel panorama musicale italiano è per certi versi trionfale. Gianni entra a far parte del gruppo Balletto di Bronzo, e compone la suite YS, con le sue tastiere e la sua voce. Una suite che ancora oggi potrebbe essere definita avanti con i tempi, un caleidoscopio di mille colori, un tessuto musicale nuovo e ardito dove la melodia è bandita. Altro inchiostro, non nero ,ma candido e brillante, è stato cosparso su carta per testimoniare ancora tanta buona musica durante il Prog Exhibition al Teatro Tendastrisce di Roma. Anche dall'Inghilterra arrivano resoconti entusiasmanti. Se guardiamo alle biografie della maggior parte degli artisti scopriamo sempre storie personali piuttosto complesse, difficili, chi non conosce i "poeti maledetti"? Moltissimi artisti erano malati, affetti da malattie comuni e meno comuni, comunque malati; altri erano dediti all'abuso di alcool e stupefacenti, molti, moltissimi, immersi in una vita di debiti e creditori, insomma sono stati davvero pochi coloro che hanno fatto arte e ne sono usciti vivi... Questo cosa vuol dire? Sicuramente non che è necessario sbronzarsi per fare arte anche se potrebbe sembrare il contrario. Ivan è a Roma per partecipare a una trasmissione televisiva RAI in diretta del venerdì sera. Mi telefona per informarmi che verso le 22,00, dopo le prove, andrà con un gruppo di amici in un ristorante in via del Corallo, in zona piazza Navona. Ne approfittiamo per fare ancora una volta una piacevolissima conversazione, toccando i più svariati argomenti alla velocità della luce, ma non per questo in modo superficiale. Verso le 22,30, dopo
avere cercato a lungo un parcheggio nell'infernale dedalo di vie, viuzze e vicoletti tutti congestionatissimi di veicoli e di dense frotte di umani transumanti, finalmente vedo uno spazio vuoto, quasi fosse un miraggio. Mi ci ficco dentro a razzo! Lascio l'auto e m'incammino verso via del Corallo. Arrivato al ristorante, noto subito Ivan seduto a un tavolo all'esterno, sulla strada. Con lui ci sono Helena Velena, performance artist ed
esperta di musica nonché punto di riferimento "storico" glbt (gay, lesbiche, bisessuali, transgender), il giovanissimo cantautore Emilio Rez, di cui i giornali hanno recentemente parlato per alcune brutali aggressioni subite per strada proprio qui a Roma a causa del suo aspetto eccentrico e per essere stato sfrattato in quanto gay (fatti, questi, che fanno sprofondare lo schifo di paese in cui viviamo sempre più verso il quarto mondo, fra la commiserazione e gli amari sghignazzi dei paesi CIVILI), ed altri amici tutti simpaticissimi. Nel pomeriggio, home, I decided to prepare a gift for Ivan. Spiego a Emilio come fare per acquistare uno strumento di autodifesa davvero efficace che ho ricevuto per posta proprio ieri
(eh, no: oramai i vari spray lacrimogeni o al peperoncino che porto regolarmente con me since 1981 and sometimes I have used with mixed results are not enough!). A me piacciono decisamente di più i monumenti e le facciate dei palazzi storici con un lieve deposito di fuliggine negli interstizi perché hanno maggior rilievo e profondità. Che strano:
mi sembra di conoscere Ivan da sempre. E' come se negli Anni '70, nel mio gruppo di amici coi quali stazionavo permanentemente in questa piazza, ci fosse stato anche lui. E' una persona vera, trasparente, amabile come poche. Ci ritroviamo a parlare di fatti intimi e privati reciproci con una naturalezza assoluta. Proseguiamo per il Pantheon passando per piazza Sant'Eustachio. Notiamo che parte del colonnato è attualmente in restauro. Suggerisco di prenderci un bel gelatone, e dove, se non da Giolitti? Facciamo quindi rotta per via Uffici del Vicario. Essendo oramai quasi l'ora di chiusura (l'una e mezza circa) troviamo lo storico locale, risalente al 1900, vuoto, tutto per noi. Comincia la sarabanda di "Tu che gusto preferisci?", "Proviamo quello?", "No, quell'altro!". Helena candidamente domanda al gelataio: "Avete il gusto ai Puffi?". "No" risponde lui "de Puffo ce so' solo io!".
Alla fine usciamo ciascuno col proprio magnifico cono gigante. Tra gags, risate, aneddoti, racconti, lentamente ci dirigiamo verso via del Corallo. Gli amici sono ancora tutti là che ci aspettano.

Da BEETHOVEN al BEAT:  a 8 anni comincia a studiare pianoforte classico, ed appena tre anni dopo già suona nelle “cantine” col suo primo complessino BEAT.

Periodo ITALIA (1970-1973):  CITTÀ FRONTALE, nucleo originario degli Osanna; frequenti concerti alla base NATO di Napoli.  Poi anni contorti e indimenticabili come tastierista e cantante del BALLETTO DI BRONZO, il gruppo più “oltre”, sia per la musica che per l’immagine, dell’intera scena del POP ITALIANO  di quel periodo. Come tastierista partecipa alla realizzazione dell’album di Adriano Celentano  “I mali del secolo” e al musical commentary of "Metrapolis", an album of poems written and recited by the poet Guido Ballo. Period (1974-1975): discovery of its essential singularity and uniqueness as a musician and composer. From the keyboard of a group to solo artist composes the music, arranges, performs the playing every instrument, singing and ... living.

Periodo STOCCOLMA/VIENNA (1984-1985):  LeoNero raggiunge i vecchi compagni del Balletto di Bronzo, i quali, ormai naturalizzati svedesi, hanno un loro studio di registrazione - l’HUMLAN - che è punto di riferimento della più creativa scena musicale svedese.  LeoNero registra alcuni brani destinati alla sua produzione solistica. Con concerti da solista, a Vienna partecipa - unico artista italiano - U-MODE '85, annual exhibition of fashion / designers are taking part in music and musicians from different European countries.

Period ROME (1987): Leonero by Gianni Leone. Recording songs.

Period SWEDEN (1990): proposes its successful formula of solo concert voice / keyboards, alternating songs and pieces by foreign artists performing in local cities. ROME

Period (1991-1992): an intense concert, accompanied by drummer and bassist Max Duilio Sorrenti Gazzè.

1993: he published a CD with two unusual specimens of YS sung in English and dating al 1971 - fino ad allora inutilizzati - che viene distribuito in tutto il mondo.

1995-1997:  collabora con il gruppo rock progressivo DIVAE,  partecipando come ospite sia sul CD che nei concerti, alcuni dei quali vedono la presenza anche di Gary Green, chitarrista dei GENTLE GIANT.  Col batterista ed il bassista dello stesso gruppo riforma IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO in versione TRIO. Questa formazione è attiva fino al ‘97, anno in cui il nuovo organico del gruppo vede Riccardo Spilli alla batteria ed Alessandro Corsi al basso.

1999:  viene pubblicato il CD del Balletto di Bronzo TRYS, registrato dal vivo nel ‘96.

2000:  Il Balletto di Bronze NEARfest participate in the 2000 Pennsylvania - United States, the MEXPROG Festival in Mexico City and at the Rio Art Rock Festival in Rio de Janeiro.

2002: Baja Prog Festival (Mexicali, Mexico). PROG'SUD festival (Marseille, France).
Opening act for Carl Palmer Band. Japan tour with Il Balletto di Bronzo, as a solo artist (Leonero) collaborations and concerts with the Japanese groups ARS NOVA and GERARD.

2003: Tour in Mexico. Tour Chile solo concerts in Italy by Gianni Leone. Opening act for Ozric Tentacles.

2005: Opening act for Porcupine Tree.

2006: The new drummer Adolfo Ramundo. Very successful tour in Mexico,
