Artista inquietante e surreale, irrequieto e passionale, ambizioso e fatalmente attratto dall'innovazione. Così è LeoNero, nome d'arte di Gianni Leone, "enfant prodige" di formazione classica ma anche bambino sconvolto dall'ascolto di Jimi Hendrix e Frank Zappa. Il suo ingresso nel panorama musicale italiano è per certi versi trionfale. Gianni entra a far parte del gruppo Balletto di Bronzo, e compone la suite YS, con le sue tastiere e la sua voce. Una suite che ancora oggi potrebbe essere definita avanti con i tempi, un caleidoscopio di mille colori, un tessuto musicale nuovo e ardito dove la melodia è bandita. Ma tutto va storto: Bacchelli intasca l'ingaggio di LeoNero a sua insaputa, poi paga una penale e tenta di vendere il disco ad un'altra casa discografica (l'artista lo saprà solo anni più tardi). Sarà la EMI, due anni dopo a pubblicare VERO in Italia, nell'indifferenza generale. Il feeling con l'ambiente italiano non è dei migliori; deluso, LeoNero si trasferisce a Hollywood ed entra in contatto con la New Wave di Los Angeles (Screamers. Avengers ... ..), making room for a new job, diverse, inspired by the music of the early Devo and XTC. He composes most of the songs on an old piano that he found in his bedroom at the famous Trianon, a white castle with pinnacles and towers located in a street off Hollywood Boulevard. To change skin needs new stimuli and involves a group of talented musicians that he himself selected and renamed The Optical Band. The fruit of this collaboration will all end on the first side of the disc. The other half decided to dedicate himself and plays all the instruments alone and assume the production of the entire 33 laps. Thus was born MONITOR, which turns out innovative and provocative. Sarebbe stata una autentica innovazione. Invece tutto sfuma e LeoNero si vede costretto a ripiegare sul brano "Tell me why" (se vogliamo anche questa passibile di censura), col risultato di tradire il senso stesso del suo progetto e di tramutare l'artista in merce da rotocalchi per teenager.
